Join us for the 2018 Healthcare Entrepreneurship & Innovation Exchange hosted by the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Healthcare Club and the Business of Healthcare Initiative!

This exciting and special spring event will be held at Carolina Inn on Thursday, May 3rd from 4 PM to 7 PM. We will be hosting executives from innovative RTP area start-ups and organizations to provide insight on trends, opportunities, and challenges in personalized healthcare products and services and to discuss technologies and best practices that help achieve personalization, precision and patient-centric solutions. Come learn, engage, network and be inspired to play an integral role in enhancing ownership, decision making, customer experience and outcomes for patients.

Meet a Few of Our Inspiring Speakers & Experts

Jerry Heneghan, Director, UNC Center for Innovation in Pharmacy Simulation

Jerry Heneghan is Professor of the Practice and Director, UNC Center for Innovation in Pharmacy Simulation (CIPS) at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Heneghan leads CIPS in the development of technology tools to enhance all phases of education and pharmaceutical research including medication discovery, delivery, optimization, assessment, and practice. CIPS develops ebooks, medical illustrations and animations, mobile applications, interactive web content, video capture, complex visual and bio-mathematical simulations, educational games, and virtual/augmented realities. CIPS also integrates wearable biometric sensors into research projects. Heneghan is also the Chief Design Officer for BioMojo LLC, a woman-owned small business, focused on the development of biomedical performance solutions. Heneghan is a former U.S. Army Aviator (AH-64A) and holds an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and a BS in engineering from the United States Military Academy.


Kim Labow, CEO, Medfusion

An accomplished leader with over twenty years of information technology and services experience, Kim has a strong foundation in business strategy, marketing and sales. Her history with Medfusion goes back to its early days, when she worked closely with founder, Steve Malik, serving as the company’s Vice President of Marketing, Product Management and Inside Sales. Following senior executive positions at leading healthcare technology companies, including NaviNet and ZirMed, Labow rejoined the Medfusion team in 2015 as Vice President of Product Management and Vice President of Marketing and is currently CEO. Outside the office, Kim serves on the board of multiple animal rescue organizations including AniMall Pet Adoption and Outreach Center in Cary, NC and Harvey’s House Rabbit Rescue and Sanctuary in Louisville, KY. She has an MBA in Marketing Management, enjoys travel on her Harley Davidson, and is a devoted Red Sox and Patriots fan.


Dr. Myla Lai-Goldman, MD, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, GeneCentric

Dr. Lai-Goldman is the Chief Executive Officer and President of GeneCentric Therapeutics. She is also a founder and director of the Company. Dr. Lai-Goldman spent more than 18 years at Laboratory Corporation of America, Holdings (LabCorp), the last 10 years as Executive Vice President, Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific Officer. She served on LabCorp’s Executive and Management Committees, with strategic and operations responsibilities for 3 major genomic laboratories comprising more than 700 people. During her tenure at the Company, she led all clinical, scientific and medical activities, including the introduction of more than 400 clinical assays. Her experience includes the development of partnerships, licensing, and acquisitions. After leaving LabCorp, Dr. Lai-Goldman became a Venture Partner at Hatteras Venture Partners and is the managing partner of Personalized Science, LLC, a consulting company founded to assist customers achieve successful adoption of innovative diagnostics. Dr. Lai-Goldman received her BS from the University of Pennsylvania and MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Lai-Goldman is Board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology.


David Levin, CEO, Bivarus

With over 20 years of experience, David is an accomplished leader within the health care and cloud-based software industries. He was a member of the original management teams at two successful local Research Triangle companies, Clinipace Worldwide and MercuryMD. After joining Clinipace Worldwide in 2008 as vice president of global marketing, the company became recognized as one of the fastest growing private companies in the country. David played a critical leadership role in the company’s inclusion on the prestigious Inc. 500/5000 list for five consecutive years, recognition as one of Forbes Magazine’s America’s Most Promising Companies, in addition to numerous local and regional business accolades. He made significant contributions to growth strategy, sales, marketing, operations, and helped lead the company through five acquisitions over the past six years. David’s efforts led Clinipace to become a top 20 contract research organization (CRO) globally, and considered a company-to-watch in the industry. Prior to Clinipace Worldwide, David was a key executive at MercuryMD, joining in 2001 as vice president of product management and marketing. He helped launch several well-adopted software applications into the health care market prior to the company’s successful sale to The Thompson Corporation in 2006.


Michael Levy, MBA, CEO & Co-founder, Bluedoor

Michael is a passionate healthcare executive turned digital health evangelist and entreprenuer. Prior to co-founding Bluedoor, he was Co-founder and COO of Digital Therapy, a cognitive computing platform powered by IBM Watson in the behavioral health space. His previous leadership roles include Vice Chair of Administration for the Department of Medicine at the University of Miami Health System, engineering a $15 million turnaround within his first year, and Director of Clinical Operations for UNC Health Care’s specialty ambulatory clinics where continued growth and expansion were achieved. Prior to his role at UNC, Michael held several leadership roles at UCLA Health. He has a BSc in Neuroscience from Tulane University in New Orleans and an MBA from Elon University in North Carolina. He is the current Entrepreneur in Residence at UNC Health Care’s Center for Health Innovation and Co-Founder of DHITglobal.org.


Lori Mehen, Cofounder + CEO, Medlio

Lori believes that despite their many quirks and predictably irrational decision-making, consumers will change healthcare for the better. The first step towards this change is giving consumers control of their health data, and allowing them to benefit from the many resulting efficiencies, ranging from new insights and discoveries to better experiences to broad marketplace transparency. Her vision for Medlio is to create an open and efficient healthcare economy, but she’d settle for #WorldPeace. Prior to co-founding Medlio, Lori worked in global corporate marketing at Red Hat, founded and led the healthcare channel at Opensource.com, and worked in the revenue cycle management group at Kareo, an EHR company focused on small to mid-sized private practices. She received her BA in English from UCLA. Lori recently rejoined CrossFit and is doing her best to suffer quietly. For fun, she enjoys off-roading in four low, and contemplating behavioral economics and real-time feedback loops.


Brian Moynihan, Head of Health Technology and Informatics at UNC HSL

Brian Moynihan is the Head of Health Technology and Informatics at the UNC Health Sciences Library, Director of the Carolina Digital Health Research Initiative (CaDHRI), and Founder of the UNC Augmented and Virtual Reality Group. He has both an MBA and Masters of Information Science from UNC Chapel Hill. Brian is Adjunct Faculty in the Carolina Health Informatics Program, and he co-founded of Health 2.0 NC Triangle, a group with over 1,300 members working in health innovation.  He has organized local health hackathons, and is an active mentor of students and startups in the Triangle health innovation community.


Charlie Queen, Director of Laboratories at Panaceutics

As a founding member of the Panaceutics team, Charlie serves as Lab Director leading research and development activities for personalized nutrition since 2013. Panaceutics utilizes a patented small batch manufacturing platform to create custom combination therapies in innovative gel and puree forms to reduce consumer pill burden. The company is also developing personalized medicine products as ‘precision generics’ beginning with an indication for Cardiovascular Disease. Charlie holds a BS in Biology and a BA in Chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill, as well as a Masters in Microbial Biotechnology from NC State University.
